Now, everyone at one time or another has let the right foot be a little too heavy and yes as the velocity of a vehicle increases its potential to do harm does increase. However, it is often the skill of a driver that determines how safe or unsafe they are to others.
What Shane depicts in his post is illegal in the U.S., but is it necessarily unsafe? I believe the answer is maybe. For all we know Shane is the Stig or trained F1 driver (probably not, but anyway) and he is just as capable at those speeds as he is at the 65 mph speed limit. I agree with Eric in that it is all risk management and what one considers acceptable. He didn't hurt anyone and perhaps he did his run at 4 a.m. on a dry evening to minimize risk. If that were the case I would consider his very responsible.
As far as it being illegal... there are many things that are illegal we have all done (before you say no, I bet you've dumped oil in your back yard or claimed a little too much as a write off on your taxes, or maybe you smoke pot in high school, haven't you?)
I think the point is there is a difference between unsafe and illegal and it is unfair to assume the worst of the situation Shane describes.
In summary Shane was trying to make a point about the capabilities of our cars. They really are great vehicles; i believe we can all agree about that. But, what he chooses to do or risk he chooses to assume are his own.
