My understanding is that the reason it's difficult to do properly for the regular DIY'er is because the compressor wheel has to be balanced with the turbine wheel/shaft. The only way you can replicate this without special equipment is to mark the compressor and turbine wheels and attempt to put them together in the exact same clock positions as they were originally; but that will really only get you very close at best.
