I have lots of track experience: 10 years of driving, instructing, and most recently racing.
I started in Porsches and then moved to a much more economical (taking a car to the track is NEVER economical) mazda miata.
The obvious answer from me is to find a miata and put a roll bar in it. Everything for them is cheap and being RWD and very much a momentum car means that you will learn a lot about being smooth and not over using the brakes.
I also realize that not everyone has the budget, garage space, or understanding significant other to have another car. Anyone that races at one point was doing drivers education with their street car. The most tempting upgrade to make is tires and brakes. For about $1000 you can drop your lap times by a few seconds. I'm a Hawk and Toyo guy (b/c they have fantastic contingency programs) and i'd say go with the RA-1 and the DTC-60 if you're pretty serious about this and finding that you're not driving the car on the street much and are hindered by your current brakes overheating and tires just not gripping. If you're still pretty green though, Proxes T1-R and Hawk HPS might be the way to go since it can be tough getting enough heat into the RA-1 and DTC package.
As an example, it takes me a full lap of mid ohio to get into the lower temp ranges of the same tires and brakes on my race car.
