as far as orientation of plugs goes, you want the open end of electrode towards the intake valve. the theory being that the flame front will start sooner. if gas doesn't have to go around the plug center post with fire bouncing off back wall of cyl. you get more complete combustion.
using a sharpie and drawing a line all the way up the ceramic will let you know where your open plug center is when it's in engine.
depending on plug in head orientation you can draw it either in line with center post (180 degree off), or in line with opening of plug. on the TR6 it was easier to see with sharpie line on plug opening side.
the sharpie line does wear off over time sliding boots on and off, so you may need to redraw, or use white nail polish (or other visible colour) on the metal collar of plug.
as you know, add or remove washers to get your plugs to line up where you want them to.
i wasn't really at point to check for any increase in mileage or power when car came off road due to smog requirements so i cannot speak to that. it's out of smog year range now so i may get back to it and get it running again in the future.
hope this helps a little.
mark :-)
