Re: C900 mix & match hot rodding (Long!) Posted by 900 Aero [Email] (#425) [Profile/Gallery] (more from 900 Aero) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 21:02:22 In Reply to: C900 mix & match hot rodding, ocn, Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:56:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The first C-900's (Euro '84 all '85's & early '86's) used narrower rods and journals, these rods have a straight across machine rod bolt head area rather than a counter bored round like the later rods use so they're not as strong. Also these early engines used a small port head but the intake ports are symmetrical unlike the later 2.0 heads. The early heads intake cams have 3mm less lift on one each of the lobes to create swirl for low end power where the later ones use the non-symmetrical intake ports to accomplish this. These early 16 valve engines have a smaller combustion chamber with a larger dish in their pistons. Then from late '86 up everything was pretty much the same however when GM (Government Motors) got involved in 1990 the awesome material the crankshafts were made of became typical rather than overkill in 1991 which is when they introduced the 2.1 non-turbo engine that is know to have block problem due to bad material. We haven't seen later cylinder heads suffer from inferior material in fact lots of us here use the 2.1 head, intake manifold, fuel rail, 3 bar fuel pressure regulator and bracket on our C-900 and early 9000 turbos because of their larger intake ports which are symmetrical! The '91-'93 C-900 2.1 non-turbo and all '91-'93 9000 2.3 heads are the same. Lots of us here have used '85 exhaust cams with '87 up non-turbo intake cams with good success reported however when I tried it in one of my 2.0 C-900T's I wasn't all that impressed. Another popular mix and match upgrade is to use '94-'98 9000T / '94-'99 New Generation 900T 33.9 lb per hr fuel injectors in our C-900T's which also have a better spray pattern however a reprogrammed fuel chip or a fully adjustable fuel pressure regulator should be used with these larger injectors. The single most popular and inexpensive 2.0 C-900T upgrade is to go to a non-turbo 2.0 3 bar fuel pressure regulator. I personally like the Mitsubishi manufactured TE05-12B turbo Saab went to in their '91 up C-900T's which was also use in '90 SPG's. Most of us upgrade this nifty quick spooling turbo from a 12B to 16G or Big 16G compressor wheel. The T3 Garret these cars came with is probably the most upgraded turbo there ever was but I only believe in doing one if a more modern turbine wheel is use with properly shaped blades which can get a little expensive. By the way all C-900T's through '89 need a flap ground and smoothed away just before the exhaust manifold outlets into the turbo! I'm sure others here will chime in with their creative mix and matching experiences.
