The ARP studs that are typically sold for Saab's are actually for 2.3 Ford SOC engines that use cast iron heads so they don't expand and contract as well as they should when used in an aluminum head application. Their shank area is reduced so they will work but we grind the shank area smaller. Other problem is that ARP made these particular studs with a tapper at the top of where the stud threads into the block so even if you don't over tighten the stud when the head is torqued the stud locks into the block so tight that the small hex in the top rounds out when you try to remove the studs so the head can be removed next time a head gasket is needed. I fix this problem by grinding that tapered portion off when I reduce the shank for an aluminum head then I bottom tap the block so the stud goes further into the block like studs are supposed to. We torque ours to 86 lbs with ARP lube and just torque in the same order as Saab recommends.
