Let me explain about this 1/8 mile format. The cras need to be street legal. You can't run faster than 10 seconds. The cars are run to establish your best ET and speed. If we had a 13 second SAAB running 55 MPH we get the green lite 3 seconds faster than the fire breathing Camaro. If we have better reaction time to our lite than the camaro and we run dead on to 13 seconds, we can bet that camaro unless be runs right on his numbers and beats our reaction time. Reaction time is how fast you break the start line beam from when the green light comes on. You want a consistant car. That is why they almost all run atomatics. It is hard to shift and launch the same every time.
This program was set up to get kids into the sport. I don't think my grandson will continue in this for much longer. I keep taking him to SCCA solo events and hillclimbs. He last said to me, " might take more skill to turn left and right".
I built the turbo car we have been discussing from a92 900S that I bought off atrailer on the way for scrap. The rest of the parts for conversion came from the corners of my shop, except for maybe 1000.00 in new engine parts and brake parts. BTW the 13 second tiomes are from the present car he is using ,a 90 900SA. This car is slow!! The turbo car is finally running and we expect to get in atest and tune day soon. I have been experimenting with several combinations of off the shelf stuff and various boost levels. The car jacked up from rest to stall speed ,2100 + seems to be just coming into low boost and moves out fairly well and then comes on strong the rest of the way.(we wouldn't try any of this on the public roads of course). You guys can all laugh, but the kids are having fun and I love to get the goat of the Muscle car crowd.
When he gets his drivers license soon, he will have a nice little street car with a tough steel body around him and ABS and an airbag. Better than some tin car.
WE keep you all posted.
