Viggen Explosions Under the Hood....

...I know, doesn't sound good but all seems fine now...smooth idle, good power, although I don't want to step in on the highway.
Some history and explanation. 2002 Nordic Stage 4 Viggen has been running great for the past few years. A few months ago, at high speed on the highway, down shifting into 4th and flooring it the car began to accelerate, then bucked a couple of times with grey smoke out the back. I had just installed the GS open air intake and emailed Nick. He thought I might have installed the MAF backwards but that wasn't the case. So I installed a new MAF and all seemed fine.
Then about a month ago, same deal, loss of power at WOT and grey smoke. Replaced the DIC with a new one and reset the ECU. All fine except last weekend a couple of big bangs under the hood (reminded of my '70s V8s when they backfired through the carb but with a bit of a mechanical sound) loss of power (no smoke this time) and then everything fine. I dared not step into it again and drove home carefully. No CEL and car runs great with lots of torque and power.
Checked all vacuum lines, pressure lines, vacuum tested the recirculating valve, checked plugs and all seems fine. Only happens on WOT on the highway at higher speeds and seemingly intermittently. Could be related to high ambient temps too but not sure as my first email was in March and I doubt it would have been that hot here.
Any idea what this could be? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to be rebuilding an engine all too soon.
