Blue smoke coming out the tail pipe usually means oil.
Sounds like you may have blown the head gasket, where the leak is from the water/coolant jacket into one of the cylinders. You may want to do a compression test and see if you're loosing compression on one of the cyl's.
All is not lost. Best case you just need to replace the gasket. In a worse case you may have a warped the head.
You don't mention whether you continue driving and for how long after you first noticed the "white smoke". If you drive it a lot after, and if you notice your coolant temp rising, you may have a problem with warpage.
I can tell you that I had blown a head gasket on my '88 'S and ran for weeks if not months not really knowing of the problem. Engine would heat up and essentially seal the leak. But at cold start I could hear the valves rattling around through the compromised gasket. I was fortunate in that the blow-outs were at cyl's 1 **AND** 4 -- right through the ends of the head, rather than into the water or oil jackets.
I doubt seriously that it's your rings, if no blue smoke, nor valves or valve guides. Watch for blue here, but then blue may also indicate a turbo going bad (which if your's is an 'S, it won't have...).
You should have it back on the road in no time! Good luck!
