I had a 944T for 5 years and as I lived with a Porsche mechanic at the time, I modified the hell out of it!! I ultimately spent in excess of $25K in repairs and mods and for the most part, it was worth it!
Without a doubt, they are the BEST used sports car you can buy as they offer incredible performance for very little (initial) cash. You can pick-up a used 944T for $6K and a pristine example of the later "S" cars (or a 1989 model) can be had for $12K - $15K. The handling is as neutral as they come, have huge brakes and will outperform many "sports" cars built 15 years later.
My car ultimately dyno'd at 365HP/395TQ at the rear wheels at 20psi on Sunoco 94 gas. The performance was obviously fantastic and all of this out of a single turbo 2.5L 4 cylinder ;-) The car was heavily modified with a big hybrid Garrett turbo, Haltech engine management, big injectors, etc... A stock 951 with a good set of chips will push nearly 300HP at the crank for only a few hundred $$ investment, not a bad deal.
However, the repair costs can be very high as compared to my 9K and I would not recommend owning one of this cars unless you ALWAYS have a few thousand $$ in the bank for the unexpected blown head gasket!
If seriously considering the purchase of a 944T, check-out http://www.rennlist.org which a mailing list similar to the SaabNet BB.
That's my $.02!
