Hello.
My name is Dave. I have a clean 87 9000T 135,000K
I blew my head or head gasket yesterday ?
Will remove and inspect the block before dumping excuses $$
Im thinking about buying a 2.1L or 2.3 L head from a junkyard for 200$
then replacing the exhaust guides and do a valve job and mill the head.
I want to spend less than 600$ on a finished head.
People have told me this is far better than wasting $$ on the stock head ?
I don't want to waste energy with selecting the wrong combination of parts.
1) Is it worth it to swap to a1990-93 Head,
2.1 or 2.3 L 90-93 turbo non turbo intake and injector bracket,
What is the best or proper combination of parts ? Year, intake,
turbo or non turbo ? Please send infor on all special
parts needed.
2) Ive compared the heads and noticed fit is identical and but the port sizes are bigger. Will I loose all low end torque ? I ues the car daily but track it a few times in the year.
My car setup is:
Suspension: 205 Z50s, 16" wheels New Konis, Lowering springs 1.4'
20mm sway bars, poly bushings and A Arm.
Motor: 3.0' red injectors APC turbo bypass valve APC TURBO Chip
8 mm Magnacore wires K&N air filter system tweaked distributer new throttle switch.Removed boost limiter.
I saw these posted and want the best real world experiance.
Thanks Dave.

Hi Marq, I've built some nice Saabs and lately have built as my next rally car a Ford Sierra Cosworth engine as,
amongst
other things, a learning exercise. The 2 motors a soooooo close that it is amazing. Particularly when you consider the
Cossie
makes 225hp stock with cat and that all the dimensional data (port area,bore/stroke, crankshaft dims, valve sizes, valve
lift,
cam duration, everything you can measure) are within 1or2% being the same. The biggest difference is rod
length-advantage
SAAB at 134.25mm c-c. The biggest gains are found in the manifolds and the engine management. Tell whoever will
do the
valve grind and guides to "clean up the short side radius" in the VALVE POCKETs. Any more than that is an utter
waste of
time. Save your money for FORGED PISTONS, a better TURBINE Housing, a better waste gate actuator, 3 inch
exhaust, and a REAL, reliable multi-plate LSD. Contact me if you want more details, but do it by phone, I am not a
typist.
REmember it's a turbo, not normally aspirated. Different rules apply, porting, lift, duration are fine. We just want more
TORQUE in tha same powerband, don't we?
Find a used 2.3 liter head from 90 to 93. It has larger intake ports. Or find a cylinder head from a 2.1 liter. It's the
same head
as 2.3. Also the 2.1 liter has the intake manifold to match those larger ports. I would bet this is cheaper than buying
aftermarket. Just bolt on and drive.
Has anyone done this or looked into doing this swap. I looked at a 2.3 from a '91 9000T which I could get dirt cheap. It
has
DI which I could not use (don't want to swap all the electronics) on my '86 2.0 9000T. From previous research I found
the
bore is the same in both motors. There is a cover on the side of the head covering the hole for the distributor. Any
major
problems fitting the distributor? I beleive the 2.3 has balance shafts where my 2.0 does not. What problems could this
create?
Anyone know if the timing chains are the same between the motors?
Thanks for any info, ideas, or opinions!

the cap for the rotor can be removed. What I'm not sure of is if the end of the cam has the "key" for the distributor.
You may
have to swap camshafts between heads. The benefit is a better flow. You may want to consider swaping the intake
manifold
along with the head to be sure of a match.
The balance shafts are external to the crank case (enclosed, but external to the case itself), and are not really needed.
These
were strictly used to reduce NVH experienced with the larger mass found in the 2.3. In fact many tuners are
removing them
from 2.3 engine blocks to get rid of weight and added parasitic drag. You having a 2.0 block will have no problems
without.
(Can't really put them on anyway...)
So by all means, do it if you're getting it cheap. Very simple performance mod.
