I have seen 86 heads w/ equal lobe cams and alternate ramped ports, that are stamped 86. Giver of bad info, should we exile you?..
Interesting info on the 85 cyl head. I've read a book by a famous performance tuner that said lower intake ports create less flow due to the restriction of the bend into the comb chamber. It also causes less flow on the frontside of the valve which would restrict air additionally (it would be like using a smaller valve). It would be interesting to see some flowbench testing on his assumptions.
Awhile back there were was bad info circulating about the 85 cams. The individual Intake and exhaust profiles were flip flopped. Given the old info, I believe the thought was the smaller duration would increase spool up but since the old info is wrong, it's not the case. Why your car ran like crap, I'd probably question your installation. The exhaust cam would not cause that, you must of missed a tooth. The 85 exhaust cam has an identical profile as the 86+ equal lobe intake. The combo has only slight differences and should theoretically make the car a little more perky due to a smaller LSA and a little bigger overlap, nothing major though.
