Yeah, good friend has an '89 Turbo. He picked it up for $1000 and we replaced the motor. Unfortunately I couldn't talk him into an engine swap, so we stuck to the stock 7MGTE. Crappy motor, total underachiever. 3.0l DOHC V6 TURBO that makes 230hp? Gimme a break! A Saab B234 made 225hp with two less cylinders and one less litre... my Alfa makes 240 without a turbo. A freakin' Taurus made 220 the same year! Yeah, you can pump 'em up a bit, but as someone else pointed out the head is very prone to warping, and 350-400 is about the most you'll ever see out of one without serious reliability problems. At those hp levels, you're still looking at maybe a 12 second car... Mikael's 99T does that. In terms of handling, I'll take a 900 any day - the Supra is massively overweight for its size (3300lbs or something like that) and the rear suspension is iffy at best.
If you want a Supra, get the Mark IV... *that's* a well-designed car. The Mark III is an '80s also ran - overshadowed by the 300Z of the day and out-cheaped by the FC RX7.
