I ran a chain drive 4 speed in my 86 2 door for 6 months when the 5 speed in it died and I had no money for a new 5 speed. I had been running the 4 speed in a 99 until its engine died. In the 99 the 4 speed was fun, however running 4000 rpm on the interstate at 75 mph was a bit much. I swapped a #6 primary gear set into the 4 speed from a 5 speed and this dropped my revs from 4000 @75 to 3300 @75 in fourth. Unfortunatley it also reduced the other gears a bit much, making 2nd gear often too low and 3d to high.
I would say that if you are going to be racing or rallying and you want better gear ratios, take a 5 speed and play with the primary drive ratios. Remember that the 4 speed was built for an engine with a power output of 115 or so hp. 135 or so in 78 with the turbo 99. you drop a 200hp 900 16v turbo on there, I dont think it will last as long as some might think. Unless its a dog box, or some special saab rally crash box.
