Some mod to improve shifting in the 9K would be great!
Did you drill through the rubber block and both steel plates, and then thru bolt the block in place between both parts of the shift linkage? One thing to keep in mind is that the joint has to function as a universal joint to allow for the angle changes that occur when the engine moves under torque. If the joint is too stiff it may damage the sliding bearings in the transmission that support the shifter shaft.
What about a new hole, half way between the original holes, all the way thru. Use a large diameter plastic bushing between the outer steel plates and thru bolt using a nylock nut. This would allow angle changes but still be stiff for the push-pull and rotary motions needed for shifting. The rubber block could be eliminated, or the center section could be cut out to allow room for the bushing.
This would then resemble the joint between the shifter inside the car and the shift rod.
What do you think?
