Non-smooth power at high revs... frustrating!

Hey all... I'm still trying to work a bug out of my 86 SPG.. It's mostly stock.. running a tweaked APC box, bosch red coil, magnecor 8.5's, K&N.. basic stuff.
The car has just about all new parts.. there's nothing old or questionable on it as far as wear parts go.
Sometimes though, when reving high, like 4500+ rpm, the power gets all wierd.. not smooth anymore, but it feels like it drops slightly (suddenly like a switch is being thrown) and then it comes back for a second, then goes away... it's different everytime.. it's just rough.
Other than that the car is great and pulls strong and smooth. I'm wondering if the fuel pump could be dying. Is it possible that it could just be getting old and simply not pumping enough fuel or not *consistently* pumping enough fuel to be sufficient at high rpm? The fuel pump's history is questionable since it's not from this car.
When these drops in power happen, i do notice a slight change in my richness on my Autometer Air/Fuel gauge.. but it's not like it's leaning out.. just seems to jump a little.
Any ideas?
