Jeff,
If there is any wear in either the bearings that the layshaft rides in or on the layshaft itself, then 3rd or 4th gear can strip, and I actually mean all the teeth on both gears (the primary gear and the counterpart on the cluster gear). Once 1 tooth breaks off, it will cause a chain reaction and strip all the teeth off both of the gears. This can happen because if there is significant wear on the layshaft (or on the bearings I guess) and then there will be enough play in the layshaft that, under drive, the layshaft will be allowed to move away from the main gear stack, and 3rd or 4th can move away the most because they are farthest from the bearings. When it does this, it will slowly push the teeth and constantly wear them over, and eventually one will just snap when you put your foot on the accelerator.
I had this happen in 4th gear twice (never 3rd though), because of a badly worn layshaft that I reused when rebuilding my tranny. I don't really think it could happen unless the shaft was worn though, or maybe if something else was damaged (a hairline crack maybe on one of the gears). I don't think that the synchro ring section would ever break, because even though there isn't much engagement, it is 360 degrees all the way around, whereas the teeth of the 2 gears only mate in a couple of teeth. Plus, as I said, wear in the bearings or shafts can allow play between the 2 gears, but I don't think anything could allow any play between the mating surfaces of the synchro rings and the synchro-teeth on the gears.
