For the kind of power you want to run, you might as well do it right the first time, save the headache of a subsequent rebuild or replacement. Engine R & R's ain't cheap my friend. :o(
If you can't get the pistons separately, I'd do my best to find an '04 engine. Try Goldwing (Hastings, NY) or Volvo-Saab Dismantlers (CA, San Diego, I think).
I don't know the difference between the LPT block and the HO block. According to Saab's website, they are the same other than their power output, which is a function of the turbo, exhaust and engine management system as far as I can tell.
