Follow the link below to do a comparison of the 215/45/17 to the 225/45/17 tires. The sidewall height difference between the two is only 0.177" which is a VERY minor increase in ride height. This difference does, however, make the ride slightly smoother over bumps and expansion joints. The wider tire puts almost 5% more rubber in contact with the road which makes a very noticeable difference in every driving experience--acceleration, handling, and braking. The wider tires inspire much more confidence and can be pushed quite a bit further.
The negatives--wider tires do not help the torque/camber steer issue (which is not a problem for me). There may be an incredibly slight decrease in gas mileage but I have not experienced this yet. And the speedometer will be slightly out of calibration (at an indicated 100mph you will actually be going 101.4mph).
