There is a bearing housing at the front of the lower primary gear on the 88. I know cuz I had to remove it so my 82 PG cover with the older front mount would fit on the 88 PG housing. By removing it, I don't think I did anything more than revert it back to the older bearing support set-up which was good enough for the previous years. To make the older PG case fit with the bearing intact I'd have to do some precision carving of the inside of the 82 case, which currently has what looks like heat sinks or a supporting lattice pattern.
Actually, the tranny change the guy on the phone mentioned was a bearing ring inside the tranny which wore down the shaft at the point of supported. Exactly what bearing and shaft he meant, I don't recall. If you or noone else knows about any internal bearing change other than that PG shaft bearing, then that has to be what he was talking about.
