The timing effects detonation in that the timing of the spark needs to be correct to burn the fuel at the proper time. If you have too much advance dialed in, as the piston rises in compression, the fuel/air mixture will be ignited early and all the pressure from ignition will be fighting the compression stroke and too much heat+pressure = detonation. You need to retard your timing to get the mixture to ignite and expand as the piston comes over TDC and begins the power stroke - no detonation. Of course, if you are running such high boost that the thing would diesel (run w/out any spark at all - much like a 82 Chevette), you need to add more fuel or cool the intake charge (charge cooler - you got - and/or water injection). You generally want as much advance as possible with no detonation.
Or, I could be FOS. That's my understanding.
