Older vehicles had piston rings further down from the piston crown and the heat. The modern piston makes the rings run hotter and that is more of a strain on the oil than the water cooled turbo. The rings are now more prone to coking and sticking. Stuck rings allow greater blowby and that is an added chemical stress on the oil.
The oil jets that spray onto the bottoms of the pistons may also increase oxidative stress on the oil.
I think that the current engines create a different enviroment for the oil. And the low volititiy RFG-I and RFG-II fuels might be adding to the oil polymerization problems. More fuel will get caught in the oil and it might be active in the sludge process.
Can't say exactly whats going on, but it is safe to assume that something bogus is going on that did not occur years ago. The first post that I saw about sludge was an early NG900, 2.3L NA from eastern Canada. At the time I though that this was an odd event. But now we see these problems all the time.
