It sounds like your AMM (air mass meter) is done.
Unplugging the AMM (as you say MAF) puts the ECU into a limp-home mode which probably is much better than your crapped out signal.
If you are looking for a used one a little cheaper than a rebuilt one, email me. I have 3 of them lying around!
