Wow, that is nice machine work. The Viggen flywheel starts out pretty svelte. On the Saab V4, there is a heavy flange that is routinely reduced to lighten it. It is generally seen as not worth the risk to mill the remaining circumferal ring. But this is likely where the vintage view and modern views diverge. Also note that the removal of the outermost material was most effective in reducting rotational inertia.
But can I ask why you wanted a ligthened flywheel. Sure they make sense in the case of racing/solo where down shift speed is key but on the street???
My competion Sonetts all sport lightened flywheels but with a metalic solid clutch the lack of rotating mass it is a detriment to a smooth launch (heel/toe is greatly improved however). I can live with that in competition, but on the street it would get tired real fast. My HiPo street Sonetts have full mass flywheels.
When you say you can notice the engine reving faster is that with the clutch depressed? The amount of rotational intertia saved in the clutch is only a small percentage of the rotational interita of the drive train when the drivetrain is engaged.
I am new to the world of T16, but some concepts should carry over from the vintage Saab world.
