The potential for this to be a problem is reduced if you use an electric fuel pump. Put the key in the ignition, wait a few seconds for the pump to refill the the carb (if there is any missing fuel), then start the engine. In my car, I wait to hear the tone in the pump change slightly as the line reaches full pressure. I did this after installing an Ashcraft two-barrel Weber.
