Hi Scott,
First, how long was the car driven with the bad boots? IE, how much grit, slop, and junk got in there? This may cause problems, particularly in the outer one, if left in there. The outer one is more susceptible to road junk...
Here's a method for replacing boots with the axle in the car. Jack car, remove wheel, then remove 2 bolts that hold BOTTOM ball joint to A-arm. You can then PULL the bottom of the axle/hub assembly out from the car until the inner joint pulls free of the driver. Then, the boots can be replaced. NOT easy on a Sonett III, was you have little room to work. Pass side is worse.
If you want to remove the axle, you can use the same method. BUT you MUST compress the spring before removing the top ball joint bolts. If you don't, you could LOOSE YOUR HEAD. Literally. From the spring flying out. Obviously, you need to remove the brake caliper and the tie rod end first. This method will allow you to slide the whole axle free from the car. Then you can clean, re-grease, and replace properly.
It is difficult to slide the new boots over the TEE on the inner end of the axle. New boots have torn when attempting this. Grease, a little warmth (don't try it with a cold boot at 20 below in Vermont), and patience to get the thing to slide over. Again, not so easy in the car, but it can be done!
This is a quick summary- let me know if you want more details.
