Hi Dave,
The best step-by-step instructions can be found in the Saab manual or the Haynes manual. Very simple and straight-forward. If you have no manual, you can make a drawing of the shoes and springs BEFORE you take them apart. Or take a picture. Only do one side at a time, so if you get screwed up, you can look at the other side for reference. Know that the shoes mount differently- the trailing shoe is mounted upside down from the forward shoe. I really encourage you to buy a manual though. Chip Lamb sells complete rebuild kits and factory reprint manuals. Or you can make up you own using Skandix or The Saab Site for parts. When I do rear brakes, I replace everything- shoes, hardware, and rear cylinders. Anything less seems to be a waste of time. T
Know that you need to back off the brake adjuster before pulling the drum. It is a square head and needs a special socket available at most tool places, like Sears. However, previous owners tend to round them off, so that means vise grips. I made a puller for my wheels- but I have a welder so it's no big deal. Not sure what to tell you there... The bearings are pressed in. In all my years of VSaabs, I think I've only replaced one rear set and maybe two front sets. They seem to last a long time. Once you have them apart, the adjuster will screw all the way you- coat it with anti-seize before putting it back. You can get new ones if yours is totally messed up. I've even seen a nut welded on the end of buggered up ones.
In sum, if you've done one drum rebuild, the VSaab is no problem. It's easy to do.
Let me know if you want more detail...
