handling on a stock suspension

I'd just like to share this with you guys...about a month ago I was driving my '74 sonett and a deer jumped out as I was moving past it. I swerved hard to the left and then zigzagged trying to get back to driving in a straight line. For my summer job I was used to driving a big creepy white van so I wasn't used to the sonetts responsive steering. It handles somewhat like a gokart. Anyway, I feel like the stock suspension works great; during my episode I had the tires screeching and the body was swaying with the turns, BUT neither the front end or back end broke loose and I was able to save the car from going into the ditch (and from hitting the deer). Seems like they designed it right.
Is the only advantage of modifying the suspension--like adding a sway bar or shorter/stiffer springs--to reduce that body roll while cornering?
