I had to take the engine out in order to sort out rust problem on the panels below and around it. While out I decided to get rid of the freewheel using the sleave system as soon often shown on this forum. Stupidly I also decided to take the top off the gearbox just to see the condition of the gears. After I assembled it I hand tested the gear operation, it selected each gear so I installed it back in the car. In 1st gear it is perfect, however in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear, it certainly is engaged however there is a grinding noise. I drained the oil and sure enough there is metal in it. Last night I loosened the steering box then lifted the top off the gearbox, as I am sure that those little arms with pegs on them are not engaging correctly. Has anybody here had their box open and if so how did they fit the top correctly.
I have bought 2 manuals for this car, but neither has the gearbox in it. is there one available? Do any other Saabs use this box?
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
