hey guys,
long time Saab owner here since 1990. on my 3rd now. currently an orig owner 1999 9-5SE 2.3LPT sedan, Frost Grey with 150k miles. bought my first Saab in college: 1983 900s 3dr wine colored with 135k miles on it. Drove it for 10 years to 305k miles when someone ran a stop, hit me and totalled it. still love that car. had a bright green 1994 900s in between. "not so much love" as the '83 and the '99 9-5. had the 9-5 almost 11 years now (wife drove it first 5 years while I drove the '94).
anyway, ever year or so I turn to the Sonnet III classifieds and think about getting serious. just love the Sonnet III. believe it or not but I have NEVER seen one in real person in the US! another HUGE reason I want one. I like being different and unique (typical Saaber). was driving through NewZealand back in 1998ish and followed a beautiful red one for a long time on the south island. but I have yet to see one in person up close. I've lived in SC, NC and FL so not many classic Saabs around. see at least a few Ferraris a week and 25-50 Porsches/day here in south FL. but no Sonnets!!
prices and conditions of course are all over the place. was wondering what I might expect in condition for say $4k range? seem to always see several listed in that range. I think I'd like to get something that has already been rust corrected and is running well. I can do DIY mechs and interior I think. I R&R parts on my 9-5 DIY all the time with lots of help from the 9-5 board. but I am no pro and have never opened up an engine or tranny/gearbox/clutch. if paint is needed, would have someone do that for me later.
also, what's the situation with going bumper-less on a 73 or 74 to get the 71-72 look? or does it leave you with big gaps in the fiberglass body where they mount?
next time I come visit my sister in southern VT, I'd love to come see some of you guys' Sonnets that are in that area!
well, thanks for any feedback. maybe I'll get serious eventually!
