Saab (or Ford?)used to select fit bearings, blue being thicker for skinny parts & red thinner for fatter parts. Sort of like the A or AB or C piston fit. You should use plastigauge and actually measure your fit, and select blue or red or a combo red/blue for your desired fit.
Plastigauge is a thin string like plastic that you put between say crank main & rod bearings, it flattens out, and then there is a chart you compare to see the actual clearance.
What the crank & rods were when new and what they are now may not be the same.
I used to use the red for more clearance when using higher oil pressure in brand new blue bearing engines. It has nothing to do with engine size 1.5 or 1.7 Just a better fit of parts.
Hope this makes sense? I am getting old and CRS <g> Retired SAAB mechanic 63-06
