Didn't the early 1500 open block engines have the chrome valve covers? Someone could have swapped them out on your car. I've seen chrome, blue (also on 1500) and the 1700 black.
Found some specs on the saab-v4 forum out of the UK that suggests the first few versions had "silver" valve covers. I've seen pics and read about it before.
