Ok, I'll take a couple of wild guesses here.
One part that is difficult to come by is the "headlight" switch in the engine bay that is activated by the lever when pulled from inside the car. Could be the switch on your car no longer worked so they ran a bypass wire and switch to turn on the headlights after they pulled the lever.
Another thought is the dimmer switch might no longer have worked so they ran a simple toggle switch below it to turn on the dash lights.
Give us some more info and we might be able to help pin it down. What currently works and does not work on your Sonett?
