Funny you should mention this. While having the clutch replaced on my '71 Sonett last month at Nines Imports, they found a similar spot along the firewall that looked like either metal fatigue or a weld that had come loose. So, I asked them to go ahead and remove the nose to give it a good look over before welding in some bracing at that spot. Good thing, too, as they found several other places along the top edge of the firewall. Nothing that can't be fixed, but still good to find before it caused a much bigger issue.
Tim Nine said it was not uncommon to eventually see that on a Sonett that has been driven regularly. (The prior owner had put about 30,000 miles on it since restoring it about six years ago.)
On the plus side, this was the first time the whole body ended up being removed since I bought it from the previous owner last year....and this let me get a really good look at the overall condition of the frame. Good shape with only a couple of spots of minor surface rust that will be addressed during the repair.
