Hi Stephen,
I never had to diagnose many trans-axel noise's in these as most people drove them until something major broke!<g>
But it sounds like a differential or pinion bearing or miss alignment due to the nut coming loose on the back of pinion?
My rule is keep an ear to it, and if it gets worse fix it before the big bang$$$ Seeing as this is winter for you, maybe pull it for inspection now?
A big job, but not hard, just a lot of fiddily stuff, esp since your's has A/C
Just an after thought, did your exhaust repairs cause any part to touch frame? It could transfer noise sounding like trans.
I sent my "kids" 40ish on the Pittsburgh Vintage Rallye this year in my 69 Sonett, they didn't win, but had a good time and the car survived<g> My health has been bad, and last year almost did me in. My daughter did say she bottomed it out once, but there were no puddles under it after the after event party, so hope all is well, haven't checked it out yet.
Good luck, RGS in Da'Burgh, Pa. USA
