The starter I got was remanufactured. Everything on it looks new. I will pull it out and try bench testing it. I never had to mess with a starter before and didnt know the solenoid pushed the gear out. As you said that seems like the most likely problem. If it is broken, I will probably just send it back to the guy I bought it from.
The old starter was definately shot. The car was in a 1-1/2 feet of salt water until it drained back into the ocean. The car was never properly drained or cleaned up. It still had standing water in it when I saw it 2 months after the hurricane. Besides the starter, the brake master cylinder also looks like something pulled off the titanic. I have my work cut out for me, but taking it one thing at a time.
