I don't know anything about this but offer a few thoughts anyway...
Steel obviously is much stronger.
At the other extreme (I would think) are Fiber gears and they are not very strong.
Aluminum is not as strong as steel much stronger than Fiber gears.
Fiber gears were what the car had originally and no one expected the car to be around 50 years later.
Aluminum gears should do the job and could last as long as the original fiber gears.
The question is will what type of material will the new aluminum gears come into contact with? (i.e. will they promote excessive wear on something else OR will the aluminum be incompatible with something else.
Has any treatment been applied to the aluminum to increase their strength?
