Saab gurus (Ashcraft) say the inside of the tach and speedo definitely need to be cleaned of old, hardened grease and relubed. It's part of their $189 rebuild service. My units are working fine, just a bit jumpy, so they don't need a rebuild, just a clean and lube. Just curious as to what others use for this lube job and any tips for opening up these units without damage. When they're in stock, Club Sonett Sweden sells new units for $100 so I'd like to keep the cost down on this maintenance step and avoid the waiting around for a full rebuild when I just need a clean and grease.
On the speedo cable, I've always lubed mine in the past. Most recommends are for a graphite based lube (to not attract dirt) and older recommendations were for white lithium grease. Back in my teen years I slapped on whatever was handy and never had a fail; so there's certainly a right way to do it, but speedo cables also seem to be pretty fault tolerant of bad technique.
