YES! Those "blocked" passages in the gasket need to be there. Some gaskets have them made of gasket material, like yours. Others have copper inserts. Old school Saab guys love the copper insert ones.
Another Saab guru (that's sadly passed away) is Jack Lawrence who ran Motor Sport Services for decades. His advice was to use just a dab of sealant in the lower corners to prevent leaks. Appy the sealant, press on the gasket, set the intake on top of it, and let it dry. Then bolt up the intake. He wasn't too particular on the sealant used, IIRC. He was more concerned with not using too much sealant, as it can press out, migrate, and clog oil passages.
