The factory manual specifies SAE 80 EP (for Extreme Pressure) gear oil. I think either GL-4 or GL-5 is acceptable. The manual doesn't say, but I seem to remember the Castrol chart that we had at the shop in New Hampshire years ago specified GL-5 for the SAABs. (3 U.S. pints or 1.4 litre) As others stated, you should not use SAE 90 gear oil in these transmissions. You want to keep the oil changed regularly. The manual says to check it every 6,000 miles and it change every 12,000 miles or at least once a year. These transmissions use ball bearings rather than the rollers that are used in later transmissions. It is important that in keeping the bearings clean, the gear oil be changed frequently. Ball bearings operate on a much smaller "footprint" per ball and if contamination gets in there and starts wearing the balls they will wear much faster than rollers.
I think the tool kit in the 96 had a small wrench in it that was the size for the small square-headed level plug. I have a 1/4" drive 8-point socket of the correct size from Snap-on. Quoting the manual, "Check the oil level... by unscrewing the level-control plug and inserting a piece of wire in the opening. If the level is more than 0.2" (5mm) below the plug opening, add oil until it flows through the level control opening." I don't know where your book came up with "1/2" below the opening."
