IF the V4 engine Saab used has an interference-type valve train, i.e., if the valves are able come into contact with the top of the pistons when the timing belt fails, that could account for the bent pushrods. The pushrods will bend before the valves when the timing belt fails.
I repeat the earlier caveat IF, because even though I know something about 4-cycle engines, I've only owned my Sonett III for three hours now! Incidentally, this was never a problem with two-stroke Saabs. Good luck.
