The V4 *was* originally designed for car use. It was intended for a US Ford project for an advanced small car called the Cardinal. After that project was cancelled, the engine moved to Ford Germany, where it was used for many years in Taunus models. It also was used in the French Matra M530 mid-engined sports car.
Eventually the same basic engine was made available to Ford Industrial Power in the US, where it wound up in many applications where a compact engine was needed, including jobsite arc welders, forlkifts, irrigation pumps, etc. A New England acquaintance once told me he also used to see them powering lobster boats (old-fashioned lobstering is basically a one- or two-person operation that doesn't require a big boat.)
Although it's been a long time since Ford sold it as an industrial engine, many of these installations are still around and some industrial-engine dealers carry at least basic parts supplies for them. When driving through northern Nebraska a couple of years ago, I recall seeing one neatly mounted on a little trailer with a pump and a tank of LP gas -- the farmer would haul this from field to field to pump water into irrigation ditches. I've been told by farmers that these engines often would run continuously for months on end during the summer irrigation season, and running on clean-burning LP they required very little maintenance.
