-- Nose job: Takes a fairly hefty thump to make those cracks, but I suppose a little reinforcement wouldn't hurt. Shouldn't be too hard (once you've got the nose off) to clean & sand the backside of the crack-prone area and lay in some glass mat and resin; I've done same on some other areas and it wasn't a tough job (other than resin fumes, woo-hoo.) Don't know if it would really do anything other than prolong the inevitable, but if it makes you FEEL better, why not?
-- Smog: There isn't any emissions plumbing on a '73 the removal of which will make the car go faster or perform better. No cat, no air pump, no EGR. Might as well leave it alone unless it's actually broken or makes it too hard to work on the carb.
-- Carbs: Solex is as good for performance as any other single-barrel that will fit on a stock manifold... if it's in good shape. The problem is that if it isn't, rebuild parts are hard to get. That's the real reason people like the Weber 34ICH -- stuff is available new for it. Also, that MSS exhaust is pretty efficient at sucking gases out of the engine, so if you've got a Weber you can tweak the jetting to take full advantage of that. It's not gonna be a huge performance difference, though. If your Solex is in good shape and since you're planning to upgrade the whole carb/manifold later, might as well run with what you've got for now and save your money...
