See the link below for an explanation of how it works. What I didn't say there was that the freewheel device is a hang-over from the two strokes. If you back off the gas on a two-stroke that is oiled through the gas mixture, you will starve the bearings for lubrication and burn them out rather quickly. The freewheel allows the engine to return to idle eithout starving the bearings. It is not necessary for the four-stroke engine.
