Da basics:
For an engine to run, it's gotta have (1) gas; (2) air; (3) sparks; (4) compression. (Yeah, okay, in the very unlikely event you've got a diesel in your Sonett, we can skip (3). But otherwise...)
Quick check for each:
1) Take off the air cleaner, look down its throat, and pull on the throttle linkage. You should see fuel squirt out of the accelerator pump outlet. If not, thou hath not got no gas going into the engine. Check the tank first (hey, maybe somebody siphoned it!) then work your way back from the carb looking for leaks, clogs, etc.
2) Usually this isn't a problem, but if the choke is stuck closed it can keep the engine from getting enough air to run.
3) Pull off a plug lead, slide back the rubber boot, and hold the metal end close to some clean metal on the engine block (use insulated pliers unless you want to jump-start your metabolism.) Now have somebody crank the engine; you should see fat, healthy sparks jumping out of the wire. If not, check the cables, coil, wiring to coil, points, etc.
4) Usually compression won't just disappear while the car is sitting still, but if you haven't got any hits so far it's worth checking.
This is boring and methodical, but whenever I encounter a @#$%-thing-won't-#@%$ing-start problem, I find it saves time to work through the list rather than hope for a shortcut via inspired guesswork...
