tabs on bumper mounts

Does anybody know what the function of the tabs on the front bumper mounts of big bumper III's is? So far I could not find much use for them, except for damaging the paintwork and being in the way when the nose is removed or put back on. When they are on the inside of the polyester there is too much space between the doors and the nose and when they are on the outside (as they should be for as far as I could see)things get very cramped. I am thinking about grinding them off but maybe I am overlooking some very important reason...:). Who can shine a light on this?
