Three weeks ago I replaced my broke spedometer cable. To find out what was actually bad, I started by disconnecting the cable at the dash, blocking the front end of the car off the ground and running the car in place. If the cable spins it is not a transmission end part. If you want you can gently grab the end of the cable while it is rotating to make sure it is well engauged to the transmission. In my case I did exactly like you did and spun the gauge with a drill. It worked fine too. What gives? I replaced the cable any way and still no good. It turns out that the last 1/2 inch of the cable had broken off in the gauge. The old cable had a white nylon end on it that had broken. I pulled two cables off parts cars and they were metal to the end. It took some doing to get the broke part out of the gauge. Got it out, new cable in, everything working fine now. One word of caution. If you pull the center (rotating) cable out of the sleeve much it will disengauge from the transmission end. I had to disconnect the sheathing at the transmission to get the center cable back in the transmission end. Ain't these cars fun. Mike
