My '69 Sonett exhibits this odd problem when the battery terminal connections get bad.
I think what happens (for me anyway) is that the connections are bad, loose, corroded, whatever, and while driving the 1 minute trip to the beer store, jiggles the terminal connector loose enough that the next time I try to start the car I get a single loud "CLICK", which I think is the solenoid trying it's best to pull a weak voltage, and then nothing... No lights, no cranking, no click, nothing...
Check those battery terminals, clean them, tighten the battery cables, and try again. My bet is on something simple like this...
The only other thing that may have happened would be that the ignition switch just fried, but I'd say that's more unlikely. It's a pretty beefy switch. If you have power at the switch, and the switch is working, then you have power to the fuse box. Assuming the fuses didn't blow (i bet they didn't) you'll have power to the dash.
I'm guessing we're talking about a Sonett III rather than a Sonett II/V4 (which is what I'm most familiar with), but in studying the wiring diagrams for either Sonett the primary circuit seems pretty similiar.
There is NO fuse involved in starting the car (it's the primary circuit). Probably no relay either. Just a straight shot from the battery to the starter, and a straight shot from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid...
Let us know what you find....
