I have a 1972 Sonett.57000 miles. 3 times recently the engine has suddenly cut out, like a switch turned off.All the dash lights came on. Alternator low oil etc.Dry weather. Unfortunately never happens near home and I was always alone so could not check for spark or such. After about 10 minutes the engine would start and run fine. The car was never very hot, had only run a few miles. Whenever I try to get the fault on it works perfectly.
I have checked plugs, points,HT leads connections etc. On Saturday I stripped down the carb. Not sure what make as it does not have any label but does not look like Weber quality. What I did find is a screw in the pipe that crosses from one side of the carb to the other. This was jammed in and could not have come out of the carb as it did not fit though the connection on either side. I actually had to cut the pipe to remove it. What is this pipe for? Can anybody suggest why a previous owner would jam a screw in it. The engine runs fine with pipe on or off, so I don't think this is my problem.
