The best place to lift it is by the exhaust outlets that stick out from the heads. There is a threaded hole in each one that's made to accept a big bolt that holds a special lifting fixture that Saab made.
However, as Kansas says, it works to hook a chain link over each of the upper exhaust studs. This provides almost exactly the perfect balance point for the engine by itself. With the transaxle attached, though (and on a Sonett, that's the only way you want to remove the drivetrain) it's very tail-heavy. That's actually a good thing, though, because you have to angle the drivetrain up at a very steep angle to get it out.
If you want to see the crude methods applied by an inexperienced person to solve this problem single-handed, I've got some pictures on my website at homepage.mac.com/jlw/saabstories -- click the 'Engine Bay Rehab' links at left.
